Amanda Blanc , chief executive of broking at Towergate, the UK's biggest independent insurance seller, was three months pregnant with her second child when - holding pregnancy test in one hand and job offer in the other - she became responsible for 3,000 people in 60 locations. The doughty Welshwoman this week launched the Women in the City award for 2009. Founder Gwen Rhys said winners were chosen for supporting the advancement of women - on top of what they were already paid to do. Past winners include KPMG associate partner Sara Caplan , Kingsley Napley divorce lawyer Jane Keir , and Morgan Stanley head of property services Lisanne Schloss .
