There are few experiences more draining than feeling like a phoney.

The notion of being less competent than you should be or believing your success to be a bit of a mistake can be stressful.

The sense that at some point you’re going to be found out as an impostor can be crippling to achievement and may cause anxiety and overwork.

The voice in your head that says:

  • I’m really not good enough to be doing this job.
  • When are they going to find out I’m not as competent as they think I am?
  • How did I get here? I’m really not qualified.

It’s called the impostor phenomenon and it’s believed that around 70 per cent of people will experience impostor feelings at some point in their lives.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

Join two inspirational speakers, Dr Terri Simpkin and Kate Atkin, as they introduce the impostor phenomenon, exploring where it comes from and how it can be dealt with.

Begin to realise how you can boost resilience and start to celebrate your achievements.

Perfect for women who want to realise their full leadership potential.

Diversity, the new normal

6 February, 2017 By WiC

Diversity: the new normal

The World Economic Forum warned in its 2016 Global Risks Report that the
pace of change in technology and the shifting demographics of talent pose widespread risks to doing business.

Certainly, employers everywhere can help mitigate these risks, even
as the world of work is relentlessly transformed. A hallmark of these global trends is the increasing diversity of the workforce. While not a new
phenomenon, diversity is predicted to grow exponentially over the next
several years, bringing the topic to the forefront of global human capital
agendas.

Business leaders often approach diversity as a problem to solve. Talent
gaps, attrition and litigation are primary risks when organizations fail
to comply with mandates for fairness in hiring, advancement and pay.

However, leaders are now catching on to the realization that diversity
is also a ripe business opportunity.

Talent practitioners have known for some time that crafting a meaningful
employee value proposition (EVP) — a set of rewards and work environments
aligned with employees’ changing needs and preferences — leads to greater employee engagement, which is itself part of a virtuous business
cycle yielding greater organizational performance.

If diversity is a feature of the new work world, the EVP will need
to evolve accordingly.

New research  undertaken by Willis Towers Watson suggests that out of myriad elements of work experience and organizational functioning, managing diversity well is one of the most impactful steps leaders can take to demonstrate their
effectiveness and drive employee engagement.

What does it take to manage diversity well?

Inclusion

Inclusion and diversity (I&D) success stories usually begin when executive leaders push beyond the compliance imperative and work to embed inclusion throughout the entire human capital system and within the workplace itself.

The Willis Towers Watson research shows that leaders across varying industries and geographies can drive inclusiveness by privileging dialogue, strong working relationships among employees and robust career opportunities. At the same time, specific inclusion drivers often vary by company and across demographics.

As such, understanding opportunities for improvement requires a deeper analysis of employee experiences across an organization’s workforce segments.

The paper, resulting from the research, outlines strategies for addressing the broad foundations and idiosyncrasies of the current I&D landscape as well as suggested road maps for organizations at different stages of the inclusion journey.

Express Future Leaders 2016 014web

Kitty McCormick, Director, Lending & Capital Management at Coutts, received formal recognition of her leadership talent on 9 June 2016 when she scooped this year’s Women in the City Future Leaders Award, sponsored by ICAEW and HSBC. Emma Codd, Managing Partner Talent, Deloitte LLP and the 2015 Women in the City Woman of Achievement Award Winner was on hand to present the winning trophy and prize, in front of a full-house, at Farmers & Fletchers Hall, London EC1A 7LD.

On receiving her trophy and personal development prize – a complimentary place on ICAEW’s Women in Leadership Programme – Kitty McCormick said:

It is an incredible honour to be selected as the winner of the Future Leaders Award. I am passionate about paying forward the support and wisdom I have benefitted from and relish the chance to do so alongside Women in the City. I am hugely excited about this opportunity, as a female role model, to demonstrate that it is the things and experiences which make us who we are, that enable us to be successful.

The Future Leaders Award formally recognises women who demonstrate leadership qualities and is an important part of the process of raising the profile of women who are making a contribution beyond their functional, technical or specialist area. Kitty McCormick was selected from a shortlist of twelve outstanding candidates, and the Award Ceremony followed an evening Leadership Symposium on the theme of The Resilient Leader.

Gwen Rhys, CEO of Networking Culture Ltd and founder of Women in the City, added

We’ve had a record number of nominations and applications this year, with applications rising by 45% since 2015. The impact of this, plus the high calibre of candidates, has resulted in an intense judging process with a shortlist of 12 going through to the final round of judging. Each year our winner is someone who stands out from the crowd. Kitty is no exception. She was a polished, professional and well prepared candidate from application form to final interview.
